OUR APPROACH

A commitment to supporting the planet, people, and progress

Responsible business comes down to the decisions we make every day. We work hard to reduce our environmental impact, invest in our people and their expertise, support local communities, and operate with transparency and accountability. This is extremely important to us, because these commitments guide how we work alongside our clients, partners, and the wider industry – with a view to creating lasting positive change.

PROTECTING THE PLANET

Committed to reducing our environmental impact

Reducing our environmental impact is an ongoing priority at Checkmate Fire. We frequently review the materials we use, the resources we consume, and, generally, the way we operate – identifying opportunities to reduce waste, lower emissions, and make better use of what we have.

  • With an 85% fire door remediation rate, our goal is always (where appropriate) to extend an asset’s life rather than replace it unnecessarily. This reduces waste and demand for new materials, including virgin timber, while maintaining the required level of fire performance. It also saves our clients money in the long run too.

  • We are steadily transitioning towards a lower-emission vehicle fleet, with more than three quarters (77%) of our vehicles now fully electric. This is helping us reduce carbon emissions associated with our day-to-day operations, while supporting our longer-term environmental goals.

  • We monitor the carbon impact associated with our operations and use carbon offsetting to support net-zero project delivery. As a business, we aim to always be across our emissions and take practical steps towards reducing the environmental impact of the work we deliver.

  • We actively look for ways to minimise waste across our day-to-day work, with a strong emphasis on recycling and re-use wherever possible. Making better use of existing materials and resources means we reduce what we send to waste and operate more responsibly.

  • For every full fire door replacement, we plant a tree to contribute to reforestation efforts. This is a simple way of giving something back to the environment while recognising the material resources involved when a fire door needs to be replaced.

  • We look for purposeful ways to reduce resource consumption across our operations, from LED-only office lighting to conserving electricity and water across key sites. We are in the firm belief that operational changes, however small, can collectively make a meaningful difference to our environmental impact.

BUILDING SOCIAL VALUE

Investing in the communities around us

We like to give back – in a way that includes but extends beyond charitable giving. We invest time, skills, and resources in the communities in which we work, while creating opportunities for people to develop careers in fire safety and supporting a more inclusive, skilled, and connected industry.

Volunteering and charity partnerships

Our people give their time to various causes close to our hearts, supported through volunteer days and partnerships with organisations including The Children’s Trust and Candlelighters. We also take part in regular charity events and fundraising activities, supporting a range of good causes.

Supporting future talent

We support young people entering the fire safety sector through local employment and apprenticeship programmes. We are passionate about creating career opportunities while contributing to the skills development needed across our industry.

Supporting local economies

Wherever possible, we use regionally based teams, helping to keep the economic benefits of our work within the communities where we operate while building strong local connections.

Sharing knowledge and expertise

Our teams deliver thousands of toolbox talks covering technical, health, safety, and wellbeing topics. It all comes back to reinforcing good practice and contributing to higher standards across the environments in which we work.

Creating a more inclusive workforce

We are committed to broadening access to opportunities, promoting diversity, and supporting greater female representation across our teams. We are keen for people of all backgrounds to have the opportunity to build rewarding careers and contribute their skills to the future of fire safety.

Supporting the communities in which we operate is vital for achieving effective delivery and positive relationships – and we are proud to go the extra mile in engaging and helping those around us.

GOVERNANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Doing the right thing – with transparency

We make sure all our efforts are backed by clear standards, measurable commitments, and, above all else, transparency. We hold ourselves accountable through formal environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting, ongoing communication, and training – and we measure our progress at regular intervals. If we find any areas requiring improvement, we take corrective action, learn from it, and strengthen our approach for next time.

Our approach includes:

  • Published ESG reports – providing transparency on our commitments and progress

  • Legislative and environmental compliance – meeting the requirements that govern our operations and environmental responsibilities

  • Ongoing communication and training – ensuring our people understand and uphold our standards

  • Formal objectives and measurement – tracking progress against our commitments and identifying where further action is needed

  • Corrective action and continuous improvement – responding to findings and using them to improve our practices

Sectors we support

No two buildings face the same fire safety challenges, which is why we tailor our services to the unique risks, regulations, and operational demands of every sector – from healthcare and hospitality to education, residential, and commercial environments.

Industry-recognised standards

Independently accredited. Fully compliant. Trusted nationwide.

We are proud that Checkmate Fire is built on a foundation of continuous improvement – it is a philosophy that is deeply embedded and felt throughout the business.
