Fire protection services

Passive and active fire protection solutions that safeguard people, property and buildings throughout their lifecycle.

Commercial fire extinguishers

The exact quantity, type, and placement of fire extinguishers required should be determined by your building's unique fire risk assessment. But specifying and installing the right units is only the starting point – from there, we deliver a complete programme of fire extinguisher servicing and maintenance, including regular inspections, annual servicing, and timely replacement, so your equipment stays compliant and ready to perform when it is needed most.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Different materials can behave in drastically different ways, requiring highly specific extinguishing agents to reduce their risk and control flames spreading should a fire break out.

Every fire extinguisher for a commercial building must be specified according to the unique risks identified in a fire risk assessment. The varied properties and behaviours of different classes of fire dramatically change their risk profile, and using the wrong extinguishing agent can significantly increase the dangers. Using water on live electrical equipment, for example, can create a serious risk of electric shock and is therefore inappropriate. Furthermore, the same ignition source can produce different fire classes once surrounding materials become involved, which means a thorough understanding of a building’s exact construction, occupancy, and usage is essential to correctly anticipate the hazards and where they are likely to occur.

However, equipping a building with the appropriate fire-fighting equipment is not all that is required. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO), responsible persons must also ensure fire extinguishers continue to work effectively throughout the building’s life cycle. In practice, this includes routine visual checks, an annual basic service carried out by a competent person, and periodic extended servicing (including discharge testing) to maintain ongoing reliability. As part of our active fire protection and planned preventative maintenance services, we help you navigate this responsibility with confidence – aligned with stringent British Standards and backed by full compliance documentation to support the golden thread.

COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS

What are the different types of fire extinguishers?

All our fire extinguishers bear the British Kitemark and are manufactured in accordance with BS 7863 and BS EN3 standards, providing assurance that they meet recognised quality and performance requirements.

Water fire extinguishers

Effective against Class A fires involving solid combustibles (such as wood, paper, and textiles), these units work by rapidly cooling the burning material below its ignition temperature. They are particularly suited to environments such as offices, schools, warehouses, hotels, and student accommodation, and should never be used on electrical or flammable liquid fires.

Water mist fire extinguishers

A water mist fire extinguisher can tackle both Class A and Class F (cooking oils and fats) fires in one single product, making it a practical choice for offices, factories, kitchens, and other indoor environments. A supersonic nozzle disperses microscopic water mist particles that cool the flames and reduce oxygen around the fire, while using demineralised water that leaves no residue behind.

Foam fire extinguishers

These units are suitable for Class A and Class B fires, tackling solid materials as well as flammable liquids such as petrol or solvents – ideal for garages, workshops, and industrial premises facing multiple fire risks. The foam extinguishing agent smothers the fire, forming a barrier that cuts off its oxygen supply while cooling the surface.

Carbon dioxide fire extinguishers

Designed for Class B fires and live electrical equipment, CO2 displaces the oxygen surrounding the fire, starving it of the fuel it needs to burn. Because it leaves no residue or moisture behind, it does not cause damage to sensitive equipment, providing a go-to choice for environments like server rooms, offices, and workshops.

Dry powder fire extinguishers

Providing protection against certain Class A, B, and C fire risks (dependent on the specification), dry powder fire extinguishers work by discharging a dense cloud of fine chemical particles that rapidly smother the fire. These units are useful in industrial, construction, and vehicle settings – though, because the cloud can obscure sight, they are not recommended for use in enclosed or occupied spaces.

Wet chemical fire extinguishers

Specifically formulated for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats, these fire extinguishers are essential for commercial kitchens, restaurants, catering facilities, and student accommodation environments. The chemical agent reacts with the hot oil to form a soap-like layer that seals the surface and prevents reignition while cooling it down.

Fire extinguisher compliance does not end with installation and commissioning. Ongoing accessibility, visibility, and condition remain equally important in ensuring equipment can be relied upon when it is needed most.

Full-service fire extinguisher support

Fire extinguishers need more than occasional visual checks to remain reliable. Under the RRFSO, the responsible person must ensure fire-fighting equipment is subject to a suitable maintenance system and kept in efficient working order and good repair. Checkmate Fire helps responsible persons meet this ongoing responsibility through scheduled servicing and rigorous planned preventative maintenance programmes.

We carry out comprehensive multi-point inspections annually to check every fire extinguisher’s condition, accessibility, and readiness for use – covering elements such as signage, tamper seals, pressure, and overall placement. Meanwhile, extended servicing – required every five years for water, water mist, foam, powder, and wet chemical fire extinguishers and every 10 years for CO2 fire extinguishers – helps identify defects, deterioration, and other issues that may not be apparent during routine servicing. Clear service records and remedial works are recorded in your fire safety logbook on each visit, giving you an evidenced maintenance history and supporting ongoing decision making. Plus, by managing the entire servicing process on your behalf, we help take the administrative burden away from the responsible person while ensuring regulatory duties are not overlooked.

Ensuring rigorous quality control standards

If commercial fire extinguisher installation, servicing, or maintenance is found to be non-compliant, it can nullify your fire extinguisher warranty, trigger enforcement notices from local authorities, and, in serious cases, lead to prosecution and penalties. Because we hold ourselves, and our engineers, to the rigorous standards set by the industry’s leading accreditation bodies, you can be confident in the quality and competence of every service we deliver.

Checkmate Fire is third-party accredited and BAFE SP101 registered for portable fire extinguisher services, with our fire extinguisher technicians registered under the scheme. BAFE SP101 assesses the competence of organisations and technicians, with requirements covering relevant parts of BS 5306, ongoing training, and on-site assessment. We are also proud members of the Fire Protection Association (FPA) and hold affiliation with the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE). While the FPA keeps us current with evolving legislation, technical guidance, and industry best practice at an organisational level, the IFE reflects the individual technical competence and ongoing professional development of our fire safety engineers themselves. Alongside these, our CHAS and SafeContractor accreditations provide independent verification that we operate safely and compliantly on your premises, providing peace of mind whether we are working in a hospital, a hotel, a student residence, or an industrial site.
