Fire protection services

Passive and active fire protection solutions that safeguard people, property and buildings throughout their lifecycle.

Fire stopping

Effective firestopping is essential to maintaining the integrity of a building’s fire protection. Whether due to service penetrations and building alterations or because of joints and other interfaces, even small gaps within walls, ceilings, and floors can open up a route for fire and smoke to spread. Our specialist team identifies vulnerabilities and delivers tested, evidence-led solutions to ensure your fire protection will perform as intended in the event of a fire.

LOOKING BEYOND THE OBVIOUS

Even the smallest breach in a fire-resisting barrier can have serious consequences in the event of a fire.

Firestopping is the term given to the specialist work that seals gaps, openings, and penetrations in fire-resisting walls, floors, and other elements of a building. The gaps or holes might be created by cables, pipes, ducts, building alterations, or maintenance works – and if they are left unprotected, fire and smoke can find a way through and quickly engulf a space. However, it is not a case of simply filling the holes to rectify this. It is a considered approach that requires technical expertise, as the right firestopping installation system must be appropriate to the construction, the type of penetration, the required fire resistance, and be installed in accordance with tested specifications.

At Checkmate Fire, our firestopping services help identify and address vulnerabilities, protecting the integrity of the building's compartmentation while ensuring its fire protection meets regulations and is fit for purpose.

OUR APPROACH

Making firestopping easier to understand

Firestopping is one of the most important elements of passive fire protection, yet it is often misunderstood and, consequently, overlooked – with many completely unaware that their building is not compliant and would not protect lives in the event of a fire. At Checkmate Fire, we believe a big part of our role is to raise awareness of what effective firestopping should achieve, supporting those responsible for buildings to make well-informed decisions about their fire safety.

Firestopping expertise

The right solution depends on unique construction, penetration, materials, and fire resistance requirements. Drawing on our decades of passive fire protection expertise and adopting a fully tailored approach, our teams understand the details behind the installation, selecting and applying appropriate, tested systems.

Protecting compartmentation

Effective firestopping helps maintain the integrity of the barriers designed to contain fire and smoke (also known as fire compartmentation). We assess breaches and vulnerabilities across walls, floors, ceilings, and other fire-resisting elements, enabling the building’s compartmentation to continue performing as intended; to contain a fire within whichever compartment it starts.

Assurance and certification

All our firestopping systems are fully accredited and comply with the specified fire strategy, alongside the evolving requirements of Building Regulations Part B and other relevant regulations and guidance. All our seals are recorded and certified under BRE/LPCB Scheme LPS1531, ensuring all work is covered by a uniquely numbered LPCB Certificate of Conformity.

Built around occupied buildings

Much of our work takes place in live environments – hospitals, hotels, and student accommodation, for example – where access, people, and day-to-day activity need careful consideration. We plan firestopping works around the building and its users, communicating clearly at all times to manage access, work areas, and safety requirements with minimal disruption to your space.

Nationwide fire safety support

With locations spanning London to Glasgow, we deliver the same accredited standard of work whether the project is a single-site repair or a multi-million-pound programme. We operate as both subcontractor and principal contractor, giving you flexibility across procurement projects.

Joined-up fire protection

Firestopping does not exist in isolation. Our expertise spans fire engineering, passive, and active fire protection, which means we will always go over and above to understand how firestopping interacts with compartmentation and the wider fire strategy. And it is vital that we do – this joined-up perspective helps ensure individual remedial works support the building’s overall fire safety and complement its wider compliance status.

The integrity of a fire compartment can be compromised by the smallest details that many remain unaware of, which is why firestopping works are so crucial.

FROM SPECIFICATION TO INSTALLATION

Firestopping designed around your building

From the outset of any firestopping project, we work collaboratively with our clients, stakeholders, architects, and contractors to understand the intricacies of the building, its construction, and the unique requirements of the application. Our firestopping services include:

  • Fire barriers and curtains

  • Fire, smoke, air, and acoustic sealing

  • Riser compartmentation

  • Fire-resistant boarding

  • Intumescent pipe collars and wraps

  • Linear gap and joint sealing

  • Load-bearing compounds

  • Fire-resistant glazing

Our firestopping services are recommended by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), reflecting our commitment to recognised industry standards and competent installation – and giving you even more confidence in the quality of our work.
